The visitors were clinical in their attack and devastating with quick offloading out of the tackle to see them run in eight tries to the Leicestershire side’s one.
Hinckley are still awaiting their first win after returning to the National leagues for the first time in 10 years and will not look back on this game fondly as defensive lapses, especially around the tackle area, and being slow to react and reorganise after turnovers proved decisive.
“We were beaten by a better side” said Hinckley Director of Rugby Paul Walsh.
“We are still learning at this level. Today we leant if you miss touch from kicks and miss tackles you are going to get punished.”
Southend’s captain Chris Green was pleased with his side: “We got the five points we came for today and put in a professional performance, but we have to get better for next week and improve on every game.”
Despite their 125-mile journey, Southend rushed out the blocks with full-back Andrew Frost scoring and converting his own try with just four minutes on the clock, after several quick phases were directed by the electric Samuel Arnott. The scrum half bossed his forwards around the field creating quick ball all afternoon from which his side were able to capitalise.
Despite Frost knocking over a penalty the young home side continued to try and play an expansive brand of rugby.
Tenacious scrum half Spencer Eke was rewarded for his enterprise, capitalising on Frost’s mistake under the bouncing ball to collect his own kick and score under the posts.
Guy Swalding converted and kicked a penalty off the cross-bar, but the remainder of the game belonged to Southend.
Hinckley flanker Benjamin Avent was sin-binned as the Essex side scored 14-unanswered points in the subsequent 10 minutes.
The defensive frailties of Walsh’s side, especially around the tackle area, and slow reactions after turnovers were exposed by Southend as they secured their try bonus point going into the break 10-27.
The second half was one-way traffic. The visitors relentlessly punished Hinckley’s mistakes, doubling their try tally of the first period.
The pick of the tires came after 47 minutes, as outstanding recycling out of the tackle, which summarised Southend’s play from both backs and forwards alike, gave centre Christopher Vaughan a walk over score.
